Embracing Life Through the DGR

Monday 5th May 2025

On May 18th this year, I will be straddling my motorcycle, joining riders worldwide for The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. It’s an event that celebrates the art of motorcycling while raising funds and awareness for men’s health issues, particularly prostate cancer and mental health. Yet, the ride carries a deeper significance – a celebration of resilience, a tribute to my loved ones, and a reminder to honor life in all its unpredictable forms.

Riding as a Tribute

I ride motorcycles, Harley-Davidsons, Triumphs, Yamahas, new and old, sporty and stylized. They’re not just machines to me; they are mechanisms of self-expression. They symbolize the journeys we embark on, the roads traveled, and the connections made along the way. Riding allows me to embrace the open air, the rumbling engine, and the camaraderie shared among fellow enthusiasts. Beyond the thrill of the ride, it becomes a tribute to those I’ve lost.

My brother’s death at 50 was another heartbreaking reminder of life’s fragility. I think of him each time I twist the throttle further than I ought to. His battle with physical and emotional pain highlighted the importance of understanding mental health and the struggles that often lie beneath the surface. In a world that feels oversaturated with challenges, riding gives me a sense of refuge – a space to disconnect, to process, reflect, and push forward.

Reflection on Loss and Health

Similarly, my stepfather’s death from a heart attack at 43 shocks me with the vivid reminder of life’s brevity. Reflecting on these experiences fuels my commitment to advocate for better health among men. The statistics are alarming, yet many continue to suffer in silence. Riding in the DGR is my way of joining this movement – of turning personal grief into collective action.

Now, alongside these shadows from the past, I’m also rallying for my close friend in his 40s, who’s currently battling cancer. His courage in facing a daunting reality inspires me to support causes that can save lives. Each dollar raised can lead to invaluable research and resources, removing stigma, and enabling others to find hope amid their

Navigating Life as a Parent and Teacher

As a solo parent of two grown children, I find myself reflecting on the kind of example I want to set for them. I teach mathematics to high school students, guiding them not just in equations, but in life lessons – resilience, empathy, and the importance of pursuing one’s passions. Participating in a cause like the DGR intertwines personal values with community engagement, allowing me to illustrate to my children that while life may be unpredictable, it’s worth living authentically.

The Ride Ahead

As I prepare for this year’s ride, I look forward to connecting with fellow riders, each with their own stories, backgrounds, and reasons for participating. Together, we’ll navigate our shared journey, adorned in “dapper” attire that recalls a more elegant era – a reminder that style and purpose can coexist beautifully.

In joining The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, I’m not just riding for myself; I’m riding for my brother, my stepfather, my friend, and all those navigating their battles. I’m riding to honor their memories and to raise awareness of the issues that matter. It’s an invitation to reflect on our lives, our choices, and the paths we take.

So on May 18th, I’ll ride not just for an event, but for a purpose – a reminder to cherish each moment, to advocate for better health, and to celebrate the unwavering spirit of those who have come before us. Join me in this journey of compassion, remembrance, and hope. Together, let’s make every mile count.

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Monday 5th May 2025 On Sunday the 18th of May 2025, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
