When the doctors sing…
Saturday 5th Apr 2025I don’t remember exactly how many years I’d been hosting the DGR in Istanbul when it struck close to my heart. A good friend—my Abi (brother)—was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
First of all, he’s doing well now, better than ever, thank goodness. I still clearly remember the day he received his test results through a voice message from his doctor singing Eminem: “Guess who’s back, guess who’s back…” It was a very happy day.
Yet his battle with the disease, along with the physical and psychological challenges he faced, was beyond anything I’d imagined. As a DGR host, I’d been more educated on prostate cancer than the average person. I’d read about the disease, attended seminars, and spoken with doctors and pharmaceutical professionals. But witnessing the reality was entirely different. I knew excellent doctors, amazing hospitals, and continuously improving treatments are essential in fighting cancer. However, I hadn’t fully realized the immense courage, willpower, and perseverance that rest solely with the patient. I didn’t know about “cancer ghosting.” I wasn’t fully aware of the profound physical and emotional transformations warriors endure.
I’ve always been proud of our efforts to support Movember alongside The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride team, the hosts, participants, sponsors, and supporters. But now, my pride runs even deeper because I truly understand the impact of our shared goal. This is not just a motorcycle charity event; I clearly see now what we’re truly striving for. It might not compare to the extraordinary battles these warriors face, but we’re doing our best to support them.
I hope more and more warriors will receive messages singing Eminem: “Guess who’s back, guess who’s back…”
Stay healthy, stay dapper.
