A Gentle Day Off: Reflections from the Road

Thursday 1st May 2025

Today is a rather special day.

I’ve taken the day off – not for myself, but for my youngest daughter, who turns 18. The sun is shining, the air is warm, and after a morning spent mowing the grass and preparing the garden for her birthday party, I found a little time for myself.

I set off on a gentle ride, winding through the countryside to a nearby village. Here, beneath the ancient castle walls, I’ve settled at a small café, coffee in hand and the soothing sound of a waterfall nearby. It’s peaceful, and for once, I’m away from the usual hustle and bustle. I can’t help but smile – these are the moments we ride for, aren’t they?

I’m deeply grateful to support the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and Movember, thinking of all the friends and family for whom I take part. This year’s ride is dedicated to my father and father in law – “The Two Charlies” – both having gone through the operations and worry of prostate cancer.

As I look forward to more sunny rides, the wind in my hair, and good times with friends old and new, I want to wish everyone reading a wonderful day and a fantastic long weekend.

Here in Luxembourg, and all over Europe, we’re also marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Second World War – a time to remember all the sons, husbands, and fathers who gave everything for our today.

So, from my little corner under the castle walls, I raise my cup to you all. Here’s to more rides, more laughter, and many more moments like this.

Cheerio,

Happy riding, and enjoy the celebrations!

Easter Monday Reflections: To DGR Friends and Gentlemen Everywhere

Tuesday 22nd Apr 2025

Today is Easter Monday—a day that, by tradition, marks renewal and hope. Yet this year, it carries a special weight. The world awoke to the news that Pope Francis, a man whose life was dedicated to service, humility, and compassion, has passed away at the age of 88. His journey, much like a long ride through unpredictable weather, was marked by both turbulence and moments of profound grace.

It’s a poignant reminder that life, for all its plans and aspirations, often takes us down roads we never expected. This time last year, I was happily clocking up miles on my Enfield Meteor 350, criss-crossing Luxembourg and feeling the wind in my face. This year, for a whole host of reasons—some mundane, others truly life-altering—the Meteor has barely left the garage. Life has thrown its fair share of challenges at my family and me, as it has for many of you.

To my fellow Distinguished Gentleman's Ride participants and men around the world: if you find yourself parked up, facing obstacles, or simply feeling a bit lost, know you’re not alone. Even the greatest journeys are interrupted by detours, and sometimes, as today reminds us, by the loss of those who inspire us to be better.

Yet, as I sit here at a local petrol station with a cup of coffee, I’m reminded—perhaps a bit philosophically—that every pause is part of the ride. Pope Francis taught us about resilience, humility, and the value of kindness, even in the face of adversity. His passing on this day of hope feels like a cosmic nudge to keep going, even when the road is rough.

So here’s to all of you who keep the faith, whatever your journey. The sun is bound to break through the clouds, and when it does, we’ll be ready—helmets on, engines humming, and hearts full of hope. As Captain Tom used to say, “Tomorrow will be a good day.” And if it isn’t, well, there’s always the next corner.

Ride safe, stay strong, and let’s look forward to brighter days ahead.

I'm Riding for Men's Health in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride

Wednesday 26th Mar 2025 On Sunday the 18th of May 2025, I'm riding in The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride with fellow men and women across the globe to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and men's mental health on behalf of Movember. Men die on average 6 years earlier than women and for largely preventable reasons. The number of men that are suffering is growing, and we need to do something about that. So, before I press my tweed and polish my boots, I'm asking you to join me in raising funds and awareness for these causes by donating what you can for this meaningful cause and to help the men we love, live happier and healthier lives.
