I ride to remember these men

Crazy. Weak. Soft. Going mad. Embarrassed. Silent. Withdrawn. Depressed.

These are the words too often associated with coping with mental health.

And the advice?

“Don’t ask for a mental health day.”

“Just shake it off, you’ll be fine.”

Sound familiar?

Many people choose to support charities because it’s a fun event, their workplace promotes it, it’s a social outing with friends, or it connects to a personal experience.

For years, I’ve financially supported causes close to my heart: Asthma Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, Catholic Children’s Aid and of course, the many fundraising efforts of friends and their children. 

I’ve participated in four Distinguished Gentleman’s Rides. Dressed to the nines, surrounded by fellow motorcyclists in sharp suits, cruising the city. A great event for a great cause. But if I’m honest, the message behind the ride didn’t truly hit home until recently.

Men’s health. We don’t talk about it.

We don’t talk about urologists.

We don’t talk about mental health professionals.

We don’t really talk.

Suicide!  Even typing that word is difficult. 

Over the past two years, I’ve said goodbye to a family member and a friend.

- A young man - a son, brother, an athlete - a student with a big and bright future ahead.

- A father - an amazing person in the Beaches community, a devoted Leafs fan and someone known for his big, contagious smile.

This years ride is different.

I ride to remember these men.

I ride to remind YOU that mental health is real.

Suicide should never be the only option.
